Historically, the practice of anesthesia evolved from being administered on the side by surgeons, to becoming a full medical specialty. Perioperative and perianesthesia care, by its nature, involves multiple professions and specialties. However, the transition to a more collaborative model of team medicine has been a recent development in Japan, becoming officially recognized in the past 10-20 years. The Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists proposed their “Perioperative Team” concept in 2007, and began certification programs from 2014. The diversification of anesthesia care and workload management through interprofessional collaboration, for example with advanced practice nurses such as perianesthesia nurses, is a welcome development. However, task-shifting from physicians to non-physician medical staff must not come at the expense of patient safety. Safe models of interprofessional collaboration, as well as training in non-technical skills such as communication are vital to board certified anesthesiologists who take on leadership roles in such collaborating teams.
