Photoimmunotherapy(PIT), discovered and developed by Dr. Hisataka Kobayashi and his colleagues at the National Institutes of Health(NIH)in the United States, is a new type of cancer treatment that uses antibody and photoreactive dye, IRDye700Dx(IR700)conjugate(Ab-IR700). Unlike radioimmunotherapy(RIT), PIT is characterized by the fact that the light-reactive agent does not cause damage to cells that are not exposed to light or to cells without Ab-IR700 binding. Another important feature of PIT is the activation of cancer immunity. In this article, I will outline the features of PIT and discuss the differences between PIT and RIT.
