The Impella 5.5 is a catheter-based microaxial flow pump that is inserted through a small vascular graft anastomosed to the axillary artery or ascending aorta and placed across the aortic valve. By draining blood from the left ventricle and pumping it to the ascending aorta, it can be said to be a transcatheter left ventricular assist device (LVAD). It has been two years since it was introduced in Japan, and it has been used in about 500 cases. Compared to the Impella 5.0, the pump flow rate has been increased and durability has been improved. It is expected to continue to be an important mechanical circulatory support device in the medical and surgical treatment of severe heart failure.
