Impella 5.5（Abiomed社）はカテーテルに小型の軸流ポンプがついており，大動脈弁をまたぐように大動脈-左室内に留置し，左室から脱血し上行大動脈に送血する補助循環用カテーテルポンプである．循環補助としては左室補助人工心臓（LVAD）と同じであり，経カテーテルLVADといえる．本邦では2017年にImpella 2.5とImpella 5.0が保険適用として使用が開始され，各々の改良版といえるImpella CPとImpella 5.5に移行し，現在Impella 5.0はほとんど使われていない．Impella 5.5は欧米では2019年以来1万例を超える症例に用いられ，本邦では2022年4月より使用可能となり，2年間で500例以上に使用されている．

The Impella 5.5 is a catheter-based microaxial flow pump that is inserted through a small vascular graft anastomosed to the axillary artery or ascending aorta and placed across the aortic valve. By draining blood from the left ventricle and pumping it to the ascending aorta, it can be said to be a transcatheter left ventricular assist device （LVAD）. It has been two years since it was introduced in Japan, and it has been used in about 500 cases. Compared to the Impella 5.0, the pump flow rate has been increased and durability has been improved. It is expected to continue to be an important mechanical circulatory support device in the medical and surgical treatment of severe heart failure.
