The objective of this study was to develop a Japanese version (SAIRS-J) of the Self-Assessment of the Interpersonal Relationship Scale (SAIRS) by Dearing et al. (2010). The adaption followed the 10-step procedure recommended under ISPOR task force guidelines. The preliminary Japanese version of the survey form comprised 31 items evaluating patient-nursing student relationships, and was tested in a survey of 159 students at a nursing university (retrieval rate: 36.1%, effective response rate: 35.4%). Exploratory factor analysis extracted 23 items under 3 factors named “basic skills necessary for resolving a patient's problems,” “mental attitudes relating to interpersonal interactions with patients,” and “basic skills to support the patient's decision-making.” The factors had Cronbachs α values from 0.83-0.88. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded values of 0.791 for GFI, 0.746 for AGFI, 0.837 for CFI, and 0.086 for RMSEA. Our results suggest that although further examination into its reliability and validity is needed, SAIRS-J could be utilized to evaluate patient-nursing student relationships.
