Abstract

In order to develop a scale to accurately assess the work motivation of nurses, we prepared a preliminary scale, and then investigated the reliability and validity of that scale with 158 nurses working at general hospitals.

 1. Factor and principal component analyses showed that the scale was composed of 15 items in two subscales. The two subscales were designated "current work motivation" and "future work motivation".

 2. Reliability analysis gave Cronbach's alpha coefficients for "current work motivation" and "future work motivation" of .93 and .86, respectively, thus confirming favorable internal consistency.

 3. Concurrent validity was assessed in terms of correlation of the scale to stress response (SRSN-27) and job satisfaction. The results showed a significant correlation in "current work motivation" between the stress response (r=-.43, p<.001) and job satisfaction (r=.44, p<.001) and in "future work motivation" between the job satisfaction (r=.35, p<.001), and concurrent validity was confirmed.
