Abstract

The reason why childbirth in hospitals is called "inhuman" is mainly because of medical intervention using technology, and the introduction of medical instruments throughout the process of delivery. Therefore, we conducted a basic study on how midwives utilized medical instruments at delivery scenes, in order to clarify if the improvement of medical technology is the fundamental cause of "inhuman" childbirth.

The results: 1. Childbirth in hospitals has changed from the one with active medical intervention, to one with continuous monitoring using medical technology and instruments. 2. Medical technology has advanced remarkably and is predicted to be introduced more and more to delivery scenes from now on. 3. Medical technology and instruments themselves are not the fundamental cause of "inhuman" deliveries. The way of utilizing technology and instruments decides the effects or the damages to the experience of childbirth. 4. At delivery scenes, the utilization of medical technology or instruments can provide satisfactory childbirth with "safety" and "relief "for the pregnant women in labour, as long as they are supplemented by "humanity".

Now is a time when we can see some good signs in new developments in midwifery care. In order to realize "human" deliveries, we have the challenge to consider what should be done from the global, time, social, and medical points of view.
