Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develope three questionnaires that reflect ostomate's subjectivity and to examine the adequacy of the quality of life measurierments for Japanese subjects.

This research was organaized into two investigations. The first investigation was a qualitative study to clarify the contents of the questionnaires. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 ostomates. The data were analized using Content Analysis.

The second investigation was a quantitative study to refine the items of findings of the first investigation and to examine reliability and construct validity. A sample of 159 ostomates responded to selfreport questionnaires. Daily behavior of the ostomate was measured using the Quality of Life Index, developed in U.S.A. along with two additional items. Therefore, it has a different factor structure from reports of the QLI. The findings suggest that the research on quality of life for Japanese needs to be based on Japanese cognition of their life.

Three questionnaires that are refined by using factor analysis are applicable insturuments for Japanese ostemates: A modified QLI named Quality of Daily Behavior Questionaire, Feeling About Stoma Surgery Questionaire, and Positive Attitude Toward Life Questionaire.
