Personal resilience is hypothetically postulated to be the individual's innate endowment or natural capacity to positively adjust to adversity and move on in a positive way from negative, traumatic, or stressful experiences. It enables individuals to cope with workplace adversity and even find satisfaction with their jobs. The purpose of this study was to develop a Resilience Scale for Resident Physicians (RSR), and examine its reliability and validity. First, in order to select the items for the RSR, we performed exploratory factor analysis of data from 116 resident physicians. The analysis revealed that the scale had 3 factors:“Professional sincerity”, “Positivity in clinical practice”, and “Emotional control”. The internal consistency of each subscale was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The total score and three subscales of the RSR showed the significant correlation with a self-esteem scale, The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Hardiness Personality Scale. These results show that the RSR has the sufficient reliability and validity.
