Objectives. The present study had three main purposes: 1. to identify the current health status and treatment modality of peritoneal dialysis patients (PD) in the Kyushu area; 2. to identify which patient characteristics were related to PD self-care deficits; and 3. to identify the priority nursing care needs of this population.

Methods. In March of 2000, questionnaires were mailed to doctors and nurses of PD patients at 180 health care facilities in Kyushu. Responses were obtained from 102 (56.2%) of facilities yielding data on 623 PD patients which represents 69.4%of the total PD registered patients in the Kyushu area. Data was collected on patients' demographic characteristics, medical status, treatment modality, and self-care ability as well as other variables related to care.

Results. The mean age of the PD sample subject was 54.5; 54.7%were male. 82.5%of the sample subjects were treated with PD only, 9.9%received HD in addition to PD. The average duration of illness was 4 years. 97.0%of PD patients resided at home. Of these, 14.2%depended on another person for their PD care. The main reason for hospitalization among the PD patients was self-care deficit, including lack of a home caregiver. Findings indicate that increased age was significantly related to decreased self-care ability. In addition, the presence of another illness such as DM significantly decreased independence. Duration of illness also significantly related to treatment modality.

Discussion. Patient age, duration of illness, and secondary illness are risk factors for self-care deficits. Home dialysis self-care ability also depends on social resources and family support. Nurses must consider all these factors when counseling patients about self-care and treatment options.
