The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of occupational therapy on the improvement of moods and distressing thoughts on depressed patients. 105 depressed inpatients were classified into two groups: a) a convalescent stage group consisting patients who had been in hospital for 90 days or less, and b) a chronic stage group consisting patients who had been in hospital for 91 days or more. We analyzed their moods, distressing thoughts and their reactions to them, and their sense of satisfaction before and after occupational therapy. Occupational therapy improved their moods and reduced their distressing thoughts, and the effects on the convalescent stage group were better than that of a chronic stage group. The effects were also related to their satisfaction. Activities that lead to positive moods or reduced distressing thoughts with sufficient concentration may be effective occupational therapy for depressed inpatients.
