The purpose of this study was to compare swallowing frequency between healthy individuals and the elderly requiring care. We measured swallowing frequency using a non-restrictive, unconscious method based on previous research. Swallowing frequency was detected by monitoring swallowing sounds in 91 subjects, mainly comprised of elderly individuals in nursing institutions, using a throat microphone attached to the neck. Swallowing frequency was lower in elderly individuals requiring care than in healthy individuals. Moreover, the higher the care requirement of the individual, the longer the interval between swallows. We also examined the efficiency of this monitoring system and possible clinical applications.
