The purpose of this study is to display characteristics of interpersonal communication behavior in adolescents with high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders (HFPDD). The study used applied behavioral analysis to evaluate the subjects' behavior in a one-to-one activity. Adolescents with HFPDD were compared with two control groups of adolescents:healthy adolescents and adolescents with mild developmental disorders. The adolescents with HFPDD interacted more briefly per interaction episode than the two control groups. All groups were similar in terms of verbal behavior, but nonverbal behavior such as eye-contact or body language signals differed in frequency and timing. The results indicate that adolescents with HFPDD without significant speech defects may have social impairments characterized by lopsided use of nonverbal behaviors and low duration of interaction.
