The verbal fluency test is a neuropsychological test which measures the number of words within a specific category produced in a limited time;there are few studies about the performance of normal subjects on verbal fluency tasks in Japanese. Normal subjects were tested for the effects of age, gender, and other specific criteria on the number of words produced during verbal fluency tasks. Tasks requiring words with initial letters 'a' and 'ka', and words belonging to the categories of 'animals' and 'vegetables', were administered to adults of two age groups. The results suggest that:1) There is a considerable score variability within the subjects, and some obtained very low scores;2) The total number of words produced decreases with age;3) Repetitive errors increase with age;4) Rule violations, such as intrusion errors, are not produced in normal subjects;and 5) Gender effects are found for certain criteria.
