The benefit of thoracoscopic procedure for radical esophagectomy in reducing surgical invasiveness was evaluated by measuring circulating immunoreactive cells. Forty of 63 patients who had thoracic esophageal can-cer. underwent esophagectomy and extended lymphadenectomy by thoracoscopic procedures; the remaining 23 patients were treated by conventional right thoracotomy. The number of circulating WBC and subpopulation of lymphocyte (OKT4. OKT8) was obtained before the operation until the 14th day after the operation.
