In donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation, there are two major issues : mental pressures on donors and risks for morbidities of donor surgery. According to the inquiry for donors of living donor liver transplantation conducted by The Japanese Liver Transplantation Society in 2004, 52.2%of the donors felt completely recovered and 44.8%of them felt almost recovered after the donor surgery. Moreover, 65.5%of the donors felt very satisfied and 22.8%felt satisfied as being donors. However, they complained wound discomfort and numbness, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and keloid even one year after the donor surgery. Laparoscopy-assisted donor hepatectomy appears to be safe and beneficial, reducing the length of the wound. It might also reduce the pressures on donors and morbidity risks. This paper reviews the significance and techniques of laparoscopy-assisted donor hepatectomy.
