Time-limited trial (TLT) is a series of decision-making processes in which the use of specific treatments or interventions for a certain period of time are proposed to a patient or his / her family after mutual discussions while the prognosis and response to treatment are uncertain. Treatment continues if the predetermined goal is likely to be achieved, or the goal is changed to complete palliation if it becomes more clear that the goal cannot be achieved. TLT has the potential to solve various dilemmas in acute care, but it may also have undesirable effects on patients and families. The purpose of this article is to provide an in-depth understanding of TLT for its appropriate use.
