ICUの組織マネジメントは，病院運営において特に難しいと言われている。ICUの管理職は，生死の狭間にある集中治療そのものに加えて，ステークホルダーである集中治療医，部門スタッフ，そして他科医師や患者・家族との関係性を構築して組織目標を達成することが求められる。この組織形成において成功の確率を上げるためには，経営学の知見で参考になるものが多くある。若手・中堅の集中治療医は，キャリアの過程において，臨床能力だけでなくマネジメント能力も磨く機会をもつことで，質の高い診療が実現できると考える。

Management of an intensive care unit is one of the most difficult tasks in a hospital. Critical care physicians seek to have good relationships with their medical staff and other doctors, and to achieve their goals. Knowledge of management would increase the possibility of success in organizing their unit. Young-middle aged physicians will gain intensive care experience learning both management as well as clinical skills, in the process.
