Bag-mask ventilation (BMV) is the simplest way to provide manual ventilation, and an essential skill for any practitioner engaged in airway management. Although BMV is not as technically demanding as some other airway skills, such as tracheal intubation or placement of a surgical airway, it has a very important role to improve patient outcomes as a fallback technique for failed intubation, or a supplementary technique combined with other methods of airway management. Effective BMV depends on four factors:understanding the device, the patent's airway, mask seal, and proper ventilation. In this review, we will discuss the importance of BMV, and factors contributing to effective BMV.
