The authors developed the segmental micro-photoelectric plethysmography (-m; MPPG) which is a method for recording the behaviors of individual vessels in the microcirculation accompanied by microscopic direct observation. The segmental MPPG was taken photoelectrically from the vascular images projected on a focussing glass, and reflected various fluctuations of blood flow in the individual vessels in quantitative and continuous manners. Rhythmic fluctuations of 4-8 and 8-12 cpm were distinctly noticed beyond the basic fluctuation of 1-3 cpm in the microcirculatory blood flow, and the phenomena of plasma skimming and the discrete of blood cell stream were also noticed on the segmental MPPG.
