【Purpose】The purpose of this study was to clarify what kinds of emotions are evoked in multiparas by narrating their own childbirth experience.

【Method】A semi-structured interview was conducted with 8 multiparas who gave birth in a midwifery home in Kanto zone which consented to cooperation for the study. The interview was focused on puerperants’ emotions evoked after narrating their own childbirth experience, and the narratives obtained were qualitatively and descriptively analyzed.

【Results】Eight puerperants consented to cooperation for the study. All the narratives obtained at the interview were analyzed focusing on the emotions recounted, and the narratives concerning emotions were derived as raw data. The raw data were abstracted without changing the meaning to make codes. Consequently, 129 codes were obtained and the codes were classified into 28 sub-categories, 10 categories, and 4 core-categories. The first core-category【Amplification of love and gratitude toward the husband】consisted of 2categories such as《Expectations for improving the relationship with the husband》and《 Surging feelings of gratitude toward the husband》. The second core-category【 Deepening attachment toward children】consisted of 2 categories such as 《Joy felt during the eldest child's participation in the childbirth》and《Confidence as a mother of both the eldest child and the newborn》. The third core-category【 Cultivation of pride and confidence as a mother】consisted of 4 categories such as 《Confusion and relief gained from comparing the current childbirth experience with the previous one》,《Relief from resolving doubts and lingering concerns about the childbirth experience》,《Joy from reaffirming the sense of having given birth》, and《 Heightened self-affirmation as a mother》. The categories of 《A sense of relief gained from expressing one's feelings》and 《A sense of liberation from realizing that one had been trapped by the ideal image of a mother》were consolidated into【Acquisition of a sense of security and liberation through having been accepted】. This process led to changes in feelings toward one's family and heightened awareness of oneself as a mother.

【Conclusion】The hospitalized multiparas in this study were able to obtain the thoughts on the family and awareness of having been fixed on an ideal mother image by narrating their own childbirth experience and realizing that their emotions expressed were accepted. A birth review was suggested to have a possibility to enhance the development of a new family.
