The purpose of this paper is to explore the counseling function of nursing by examining the experiences of nurse and patient as experienced by the author, a nurse counselor.

The subjects were 12 hemodialysis patlents who suffered from chronic renal failure. The process of counseling consisted of a dialog with patients for an hour once a week. C. R. Rogers' theory guided the study with an aim to facilitate the patients' Self-actualization by talking about their feelings and anxieties. Phenomenological methodology was chosen as the method of analysis. This process is based on a method of analysis developed by the author for analyzing nurse counseling, and is founded on Giorgi's method of phenomenological analysis.
