 Objective : This study aims to analyze the association between the amount of menstrual blood loss and menstrual symptoms in women with normal menstrual cycle, and to investigate self-awareness of the amount of menstrual blood loss.

 Methods : The amount of menstrual blood loss was measured among a total of 184 women aged 19 to 39 years. For those, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the age at menarche, menstrual cycle and duration, menstrual symptoms, self-awareness of the amount of menstrual blood loss.

 Results : Responses were obtained from a total of 168 women who were 133 with normal menstrual cycle and 27 with irregular cycle (oligomenorrhea and polymenorrhea). The average amount of menstrual blood loss in women with normal menstrual cycle was 77.4 g. There were 4 women with hypomenorrhea and 11 women with hytermenorrhea. The amount of the menstrual blood loss peaked in the second day after beginning of menstruation and then sharply came down. The results of the self-awareness of the amount of menstrual blood loss was “low” in 17 women, “normal” in 104 women, and “high” in 11 women. 74.7% and 54.9% women suffered from menstrual cramps in lower abdomen and low back, respectively. There was statistical significance between the amount of menstrual blood loss and lumbago.

 Conclusions : The amount of menstrual blood loss was measured among a total of 184 women. This study quantified the menstrual status in women with normal menstrual cycle and suggested the difficult to properly recognize the amount of menstrual blood loss.
