Initial mission of time and motion study was to enhance productivity of manufacturing in factory. We have been employing it to job analysis of nursing and medical practice because technique of time and motion study has common points to be applied to both industry and medicine. Computer science such as database technology and statistical analysis have been also applied to support interpretation of time and motion study raw data.

However, standardization activity to fix terminology, nomenclature and thesaurus in nursing and clinical practice is expected to raise effectiveness of time and motion study. Management of “complexity” which is utilized in the field of information system development must be inspired to time and motion study extension to other applications than mere job analysis.

We believe that future of time and motion study is very bright since it will be applied to many fields such as home care of aged people and rehabilitation of handicapped people. New horizon of time and motion study will be explored by means of cooperating with other technology such as “structured reporting” which standardizes method of description, filing and communication of findings in diagnostic procedures.

Time and motion study is understood as scientific approach as an effective tool. Tools have been employed to find new scientific facts and to invent next tools for next scientific activity. Consequently, we want to encourage scientists in the field of nursing and care at large to try and explore time and motion study approach together with other information technology.
