Popular mistakes in word usage (part 1)

新人技師：私が使っている辞書は，単語の意味を教えてはくれますが，使いかたまでは決して教えてはくれません，科学論文では，しばしば誤って使われている単語があると聞いたことがありますが，本当ですか？

英文編集者：著者が，辞書に説明のないニュアンスを必ずしも知っているとは限りませんので，たとえ意味をチェックするために辞書を調べたとしても，間違って使ってしまうことはありえます．いくつか例を示してみましょう．ここ何年か，‘loaded’はクロマトグラフィーのカラムに試料を入れるという意味で多くの著者たちが使っています．しかし，‘10adeぜには重いどいうニュアンスが強く，もし入れる試料が重くなければ"to load"という動詞を使うのは適当ではありません．‘loading’のためにフォークリフトを使う必要がなけれぼ‘loaded’は使わないというのが，私のルールです．

Junior technologist : The dictionaries that I use tell me the meanings of words, but never give advice on how to use words. I've heard that some words are often misused in the scientific literature. Is that true ?

English editor : Writers are not always aware of nuances that are not explained in dictionaries, so they can misuse words even if they refer to a dictionary to check the meaning. I'll give you a few examples. For some years, the word 'loaded' has been used by many writers to describe the step of placing a sample on a column for chromatography. However, the word 'load' has a strong nuance of heaviness. If the sample is not heavy, the verb "to load" is not suitable. My rule for use of the word 'loaded' is that if you don't need to use a forklift to do the loading, don't use the word.
