  • Abstract

Senior technologist:Last time, we talked about the lengths of titles and abstracts. In Japanese, it is easy to know the length of a paper, because we use special manuscript paper. However, in English, we have to count the words by ourselves. For example, how many words are there in the expression for a correlation coefficient,① 'r = 0.887', and in the regression equation,② y = 1.13 log x - 0.59' ?

English editor : I've never seen a rule about how to count words in English. I use a simple rule that I made myself. I count everything with a space③ on either side as one word. There should be a space on either side of mathematical operators④ such as the symbols for 'equals', 'plus', 'minus', 'times', etc.⑤ English for Medical Technologists Therefore, I would count 'r = 0.887' as three words. In the textbooks I've seen, 'log y' is written with a space before the 'y'. The equation you mention has eight words in it, by my calculation.
