新人技師：初めてアブストラクトを書くとき，私きっと間違いをすると思うんです．けれども，先月日本人がよくする間違いというのを説明してくださったので，間違いの全部ではないにしても，いくらかは避けることができるのではないかと希望がわいてきました．よく間違って使われる単語にはほかに何がありますか？

　英文編集者：しばしば変える必要のある単語は，‘since’と‘while’です．ほとんどの人は，‘because’の意味で‘since’を使います．日本人は‘because’という単語が好きではないようですが，たいていの場合‘since’は‘since 1983’というようなときだけに使えばよいのです．つまり，時間に関係した表現のときに使うといいです．‘while’も同じです．私は，"at the same time"のような意味で使っています．よくあるのは，"Rats given a dose of 5U/kg survived，while 80％of those given a doseof 15U/kg died."という間違いです．‘while’は時間のニュアンスが強いので，この文章では投与量の異なる別々のラット群を用いた実験が同時に行われたと，間違って読まれる可能性があります．しかし，この実験では，実験の時間は重要ではありません．

Junior technologist : When I write my first abstract, I'm sure to make some mistakes. Still, your explanation last month of some mistakes that Japanese writers often make gives me hope that I can avoid some mistakes, although not all. What are some other words that are often misused?

English editor : Two words that I often have to change are 'since' and 'while'. Most writers use 'since' to mean 'because'. Japanese authors seem to dislike the word 'because'. Most of the time, 'since' should be used only in phrases like 'since 1983'. I mean that you should use it in expressions having to do with time. 'While' is the same. I prefer to use it to mean something like 'at the same time'. An example of the usual use in the papers I read is "Rats given a dose of 5 U/kg survived, while 80% of those given a dose of 15 U/kg died." Because 'while' has a strong nuance of time, this might suggest to the reader that the experiments with different groups of rats given different doses were done at the same time. However, the timing of the experiments is not important in this case.
