Morals and the reference section①

先輩技師：以前，私が日本語で書いた論文の中から図を，2〜3枚そのままコピーして使った人がいました．次にその人の論文から同じ図を別の人が，私の論文を引用せずに使いました．そしたら，こんどはその人の論文からまた別の人が同じ図を，私の論文を引用せずにコピーして使いました．その人は有名な医師でした．その先生の論文が出版された後，ほとんどの人がその図はその先生のオリジナルだと思いました．私はもう一度別のところでこの図を使ったのですが，それを見た人から，「その先生の論文を引用せずにこの図をコピーして使ってはいけない」と言われました．初め，私はどの論文のことを言っているのかわかりませんでしたが，後になって何のことだかわかりました．図や表が自分の書いたものではないときは，はっきりと説明しておくことがたいせつだと思います．この問題をどう思いますか？

Senior technologist : Once someone reproduced② two or three figures from a paper that I wrote in Japanese. Next, another person used the same figures from the first person's paper without referring③ to my paper. Then a third person copied④ the same figures from the second person's paper without citing⑤ my paper. He was a famous doctor. After his paper was published, most people assumed that these figures were his. I used my figures again in another place. Someone saw the figures, and told me, "You shouldn't copy those figures without reference to the paper of that doctor." At first, I didn't understand which paper he meant. Later, I found out what had happened. I think it's important to explain when a table or a figure is not your work. What do you think about this situation ?⑥
