Placental villous hypoxia or oxidative stress have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension). The stress increases the exfoliation and turnover on the surface of villi and also alters the pathophysiology of the villous trophoblasts, resulting in increased production of anti-angiogenic factors, such as Flt-1 and endoglin. These products enter into maternal circulation and cause maternal endothelial damage. Recently, protein quantifications of these angiogenesis-related genes are reportedly used for the prediction of PIH. On the other hands, we are studying cell-free DNA/RNA, cellular RNA in maternal blood for predicting PIH. In this report, we will describe the recent data of our study group.
