Half a century has passed since cervical cancer examination was introduced in Japan. In subsequent years, cervical cancer examination spread throughout the whole country, and cancer screening was launched as a national policy. Cervical cancer examination by cervical cytology was proven to be effective in reducing uterine cancer mortality. Recently, a new classification system for cervical cancer examination has been proposed in order to improve the accuracy of cervical cancer screening. In spite of these measures, cervical cancer screening rates in Japan remain low. Distribution of free coupons for cervical cancer screening has helped to increase the number of screening participants. Administration and the practice of aggressive measures by many affiliates will be necessary in future to raise cervical cancer screening rates in the population.
