Bone and the immune system share a number of regulatory molecules including cytokines, receptors and transcription factors. In rheumatoid arthritis, T cells regulate osteoclast formation through cytokine balance between RANKL and IFN-γ. Osteoclast is thus regulated by a sophisticated cytokine network and under control of the immune system. Osteoimmunology, a new interdisciplinary field which features the interactions and the shared mechanisms between bone and the immune systems, will surely provide an important insight into the develoment of therapeutic strategies to various diseases.
