  • Look Inside

Total laryngectomized patients often encounter general fatigue, headache and numbness of the limbs during esophageal phonation. These symptoms suggest the possibility that patients are hyperventilated during the phonation. The present study is undertaken to determine the change of PaCO2 by examining the transcutaneous PCO2 (tc PCO2) which is identical to concentration of PaCO2. The average decrease in tc PCO2 of 10 laryngectomized patients was 9.7mmHg. In 4 control patients, the average decrease was -0.25mmHg. These findings indicate that patients with total laryngectomy were hyperventilated during esophageal phonation.
