  • Look Inside

A cytological study of 98 middle ear effusions (MEE) of children with otitis media with effusion were performed. All smears were stained with Papanicolaou stain and May-Grünwald Giemsa stain. Cellular components of MEE were mainly neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and macrophages. Neutrophil and macrophage populations didn't correlate with neither the macroscopic type of effusion nor the repeated tympanostomies.

Trypan blue stain was used in 26 MEE and 12 aural secretions of chronic otitis media. The live cell populations of MEE were lower than that of aural secretions.
