Auditory tubal function in patients with otitis media with effusion (OME) was qualitatively evaluated by using a simple method in which the tubal patency during swallowing was observed.

The results were as follows :

 1. Dye solution was filled in the external auditory canal (EAC) before tympanocentesis and the dye solution was drawn into the middle ear in cases that the middle ear pressure was negative. In cases of the presence of positive pressure in the middle ear, effusion, sometimes associated with air was coming out from the middle ear. No remarkable change was observed when the pressure was equal between inside and outside of the middle ear.

 2. Through the observation of movement of the dye solution filled in EAC during swallowing, the three different patterns were considered to be induced by the middle ear pressure:1) initial positive pressure, followed by negative pressure change, 2) persistent negative pressure, and 3) no change of pressure. In cases in which the pressure change was induced, draining function of the auditory tube was further evaluated by direct inspection of the nasopharyngeal opening of the auditory tube for dye and by measuring the time to perceive the taste of dye by patients.

 3. Tubal dysfunction in patients with OME was tentatively classified in the three different types : 1) dysfunction induced by the involvement of the auditory tube muscles, 2) dysfunction induced by persistent middle ear negative pressure, 3) mixed type of 1) and 2).
