The distribution pattern of T and B lymphocytes in the palatine tonsil, nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa was examined to elucidate the possible immunological process in the upper respiratory system.

The results obtained in this study were as follows.

 1) Palatine tonsil : A majority of the lymphocytes obserbed in the epithelial layer consisted of T-cells, while both T and B-cells were found in the subepithelial layer. There was a scattered distribution of T-cells in the germinal center. Most of the lymphocytes consisting of the "Mantle Cells" were B-cells, although a scattered, small number of T-cells were also found as in the germinal center. In the interfollicular area, a similar T-cell distribution to that of the tonsillar epithelium was observed.

 2) Nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa : There was a predominant number of T-cells in these mucosal linings rather than B-cells.
