  • Look Inside

A case of foreign body (a fragment of a cannon ball) and thorotrastoma of the neck with a complete obstruction of the right vertebral artery is reported. The patient complained of vertigo, oscillopsia, headache, tinnitus, slight deafness, signs of autonomic nerve disturbances, partial glossopharyngeal paralysis and paresthesia of the right extremity.

The fragment was surgically removed and the obstruction of the right vertebral artery was ascertained. The patient's symptoms dissappeared after the operation which suggests that the case was affected by cervical syndrome (Barre-Lieou syndrome) due to the irritation of the fragment causing disturbances of the propioceptive receptor of the deep cervical muscles and the cervical sympathetic nerves. We believe that this case must be followed for a long period time, especially concerning the lookout for malignant trans-formation due to the radioactivity of the thorotrast.
