  • Look Inside

Three cases of the so-called "burning tongue" are reported. All cases had no obvious organic changes in the tongue despite their persistent complaints of lingual pain.

The first case, a 48 year-old woman, had lost her son in an accident about 16 years ago; she developed a burning sensation on the left side of the tongue since one year ago. The patient had treatments at various places but with no effect. Finally, the patient was treated for depression by psychotherapeutic and drug therapy with an amazing relief of pain in a short while.

The second case, a woman aged 45, has been married to her present husband for the past 20 years, but she has never been happy in her married life. About 2 years ago the patient developed a sharp pain on her tongue; she consulted various otolaryngologists with no effect. Through a psychiatrist however, the patient was diagnosed as "hypochondriasis". And under the latter's treatment the patient made a complete recovery.

The third case, a 36 year-old woman, with the chief complaint of lingual pain is presently under the observation of a psychiatrist with the diagnosis of "schizophrenia".
