Ⅰ．緒言

　今日，耳鼻咽喉科医で，Semonの法則の名を知らぬ者はないといつても過言ではないであろう。Semonの法則ないしはSemon-Rosenbachの法則は，それほどまで広く喧伝され，多くの教科書にも，その名が記載されているのである。

　しかし，その"法則"の内容の解釈については，必ずしも細部に至るまで一致をみていないし，また，その"法則"なるものが，真にSemonの意見を伝えているものかどうか，私は従来から，かすかな疑問を抱いてきた。この一つの理由は，いくつかの紹介論文には接することができても，今までSemonの原著なるものを，自分で読む機会がなかつたことにも起因している。

　A review is given on the original paper of Felix Semon appeared on Archives of Laryngology in 1881.

　It is noted that so-called Semon's law is hardly found in his paper, though widely believed to be so. The point he made was the proclivity of the abductor fibres of the recurrent nerve. However, it seems that the interpretation of clinical obscrvations from which this conclusion was derived is open to question.
