  • Look Inside

An esophageal foreign body (a 5 yen piece) found to be lodged just above the third constriction of this organ in a girl, aged 5, was removed through esophagoscopy. Immediately following this procedure subcutaneous emphysema was manifested on the region of the neck, chest and abdomen. The patient was treated by adopting a therapeutic regimen consisting of a large dose administration of antibiotic, stoppage of mouth feeding and application of negative pressure in the esophageal lumen. The patient recovered. A review of literature on esophageal trauma and the mechanism of emphysema is discussed.
