Hearing test were made upon 65 children institutionalized at the Osaka Seshi Gakuin for after care in poliomyencephalitis.
Deafness was found in 18 children, 33 ears, or 27.6%. In 15 individuals the deafness was bilateral involvement, 23%; in 3 children it was unilateral.
Hearing loss among the children affected with poliomyencephalitis was definitely higher in rate than other normal children who were not so affected. The hearing test was based upon the standard adopted by the Ministry of Education.
The loss of hearing was larger as the lesion present was more complicated which ranged from spastic type to athetotic to spastic-athetotic; the involvements were respectively, 24.1%, 37.5% and 37.5%.
