A study of the ciliary action of the nasal mucous membrane is made by observing the way in which powdered carbon particles previously sprayed in the nasal cavity are removed from the inferior turbinate. There seemed to be a difference in the rate of this removal among persons who may be conside-red as normal in health due to the time of day, the season of the year, atmospheric changes and individual susceptibility ; it seemed to be also effected by individual'sinternal secretion and functions of autonomic nerves. To what extent total laryngectomy may effect the functional capacity and the capacity of recovery from inflammatory invasions of the nasal mucosa were also' studied. Ciliary action is highly disturbed by nasal inflammatiron such as atrophic rhinitis, sinusitis and nasal polyposis. However, in compensatory hypertrophy of the inferior tu-rbinate and in certain forms of atrophic rhinitis this action appeared to be less disturoed than it was expected. With functi-onal disturbances of super-renal, pituitary and thyroid glands ciliary action appeared to be to large extent dampened.
