Ikeda investigated morbidity rate of disease of the ear, nose and throat in school children and noted the effects of adenotonsillectomy on individual scholastic records. Of total number of 1405 children, under this survey, covering the range of age group from the first to the sixth grade inclusively, it was revealed that, 23.47% were found with adenoids; 19.7 % with hypertrophied tonsils, and, 19.5 % afflicted with ozena. If those who suffered from abstructed nasal breathing were included among adenoid affections, this number would have increased to 75% of the total. Children afflicted with hyper-trophic tonsillitis and/or ozena were more prone to show positive tuberculin tests, while the adenoid groups were less so. Following adenotonsillectomy, complaints such as, mouth-breathing, nasal voice, impaired hearing, noctu- ria and frequeut attacks of colds were comple-tely relieved in 80 % of children that underwe-nt such operative procedures. Scholastic adva-nce after operation as compared to that of before showed a large improvement, most markedly in mathematics which was followed in turn by language and other memory works.
