  • Look Inside

Muscle sympathetic nerve innervates vascular smooth muscles in skeletal muscle. It also innervates extrafusal and intrafusal muscle fibers. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) can be observed directly from peripheral nerves in humans applying microneurographic technique. General characteristics of MSNA, factors influencing this activity and pathophysiology of MSNA are reviewed in this paper.

1. General characteristics of MSNA

The most prominent characteristic of MSNA was the burst discharge synchronizing to the pulse, which was modulated by blood pressure change. These characteristics depend mainly on afferent inputs from arterial baroreceptors.
