The study of disturbance in attention in rela-tion to frontal lobe lesion poses several problems. First, there is no explicit definition of attention. Attention is the basis for higher nervous and mental activities. Disturbance in attention affects all such activities and they in turn control attention. This mutual relationship between atten-tion and higher nervous and mental activities is a great difficulty for formulation of the definition of attention. Second, there is no completely adequate and reliable clinical attention test available. This is associated with the vague definition of attention. The third problem is that a major part of frontal lobe functions remains to be clarified.

The concept of attention differs subtly from one investigator CO another. We propose the following convenient and schematic classification of the aspects and disturbances of attending function into 4 groups:
