  • Look Inside

The studies on β-bungarotoxin and the components of black widow spider venom are briefly reviewed.

β-Bungarotoxin (β-BuTX) is a neurotoxic phospholipase A2 which blocks acetylcholine release at the vertebrate skeletal neuromuscular junctions without affecting the acetylcholine sensitivity of the muscle. It is composed of two polypeptide chains (A chain and B chain) held together through disulfide bridges. A chain carries homology to certain phospholipases A including porcine pancreatic phospholipase A2. B chain is homologus to certain protease inhibitors. The phospholipase A2 activity of β-BuTX is dependent on calcium.
