It is proposed in this communication to review the many years of experience in the experimental production of brain tumors with such chemical agents as the higher aromatic hydrocarbons methylcholanthrene, dibenzanthracene and benzpyrene. These carcinogenic substances have been employed in the form of compressed pellets of approximately onemillimeter diameter for intracerebral implantation in the brains of adult mice, rats and hamsters1,2). Primary brain tumors developed at the sites of pellet implantation in about 50% of the experimental mice and in much smaller numbers of the treated rats and hamsters.
