Summary

The author and his co-workers have developed a practical model of the carbon dioxide laser scalpel for neurosurgery. The carbon dioxide laser generates an invisible beam of the far-infrared spectrum, the wave length of which is 10.6μ. The beam of the CO2 laser is completely absorbed by water. Therefore, the CO2 laser scalpel is able to incise and coagulate any tissue without staining it. The highly hemostatic property of the CO2 laser enables the operator to perform an almost bloodless operation in the surgery of highly vascularized brain tumors.
