Information processing in the parietal association areas

I．はじめに

　一般に知覚，認識，思考などの意識的活動が脳の情報処理によって起こっていることはもはや常識になっているが，それが脳のどこでどのように行なわれているか？という問題は現在でも大きな謎につつまれている。目下のところ，この問題についての最も有力な手がかりは大脳皮質における感覚情報処理の研究に求められる。たしかにこの方面の研究は微小電極法の導入によってこの20年間に目覚ましい進歩をとげた。その先がけはMount-castle（1957）^17）による体性感覚野の研究であったが，情報処理という名に値する著明な感覚情報の変換はむしろ少し後のHubelとWiesel（1962）^11）による視覚野の研究で初めて明らかになったというべきであろう。視覚野の細胞が光のフラッシュやスポットにあまりよく反応せず，図形の輪郭を思わせる明暗の境やスリットに反応するという発見は不自然な人工的刺激に慣らされた生理学者たちには新鮮な驚きであった。このような視覚野ニューロンの性質はパターン認識装置で使われる特徴抽出の過程によく似ている。ある人たちはこれが形態視という建物のレソガ（building block）に相当すると考えた。

Neurophysiological study of information processing in the association cortex is a very recent development, because it is crucial to use the method of single unit analysis in unanesthetized animals, especially in the behaving monkeys. In this review, we summarized recent single unit studies of parietal association areas of the monkey by three groups; i.e. Mountcastle et al. in Johns Hopkins University, Hyvärinen et al. in University of Helsinki and ourselves.
