Spinal branching of corticospinal axons in the cat motor cortex

I．はじめに

　1870年FritschとHitzig（Fritsch, G. u. E. Hitzig，1870）はイヌの大脳皮質を局所的に刺激すると限られた筋肉群の収縮が起こることと，その皮質領域を剔除すると対応する運動が障害されることを発見した。この大脳皮質の機能局在を実証した研究がさらに深められ，大脳運動野における体部位局在が，大脳の刺激および破壊実験をもとにして明らかにされてきた（Leyton, A. S. F.，Sherrington, C. S. 1917；Chang et al.，1947；Woolsey，1958）。

　近年Asanumaらは（AsanumaとSakata，1961；AsanumaとRosen，1972；AsanumaとArnold，1975；ThompsonとFernandez，1975）従来の大脳表面の電気刺激にかえて，微小電極で大脳皮質内部を局所的に刺激する方法を用い，単一筋の運動ニューロンに促通的効果を与えるまたは筋の収縮を誘発する皮質部位の詳細な研究を行ない，そのような部位が比較的狭い大脳皮質の部に局在しており縦型円柱の形をとることを示した。

Branching patterns of corticospinal (CS) neurons in the motor cortex were examined in the cat by activating these neurons antidromically from various regions of the spinal cord. An array of 5-12 microelectrodes was implanted in the cervical grey matter of C3-C8 and a ball electrode was placed on the lateral funiclus at Th₃. When a CS neuron was antidromically activated from one of the cervical electrodes, the effects of theother of them were examined.
