はじめに

　1880年代のフランスの外科医ブローカによる失語例の報告以来，前頭葉後下部（ブローカ野）の機能に関しては，臨床報告や近年の大型機器を用いた研究により，言語に関連した数多くの知見が明らかにされている。

では，ヒトがコミュニケーション手段として言語を獲得する以前は，この領域は果たしていかなる機能を分担していたのか。そして現在その機能は，消滅してしまったのか？

When asked to perform movements, even simple ones, we often find them easier to do while observing another person's similar movements. We can imitate others without any effort. We have clarified the dynamics of the brain activation during observation and imitation of other act and still pictures that only imply motion by a whole-scalp type magnetoencephalography. During all conditions, the inferior frontal cortex (Broca region) was activated, and followed within 80-150 ms by activation in the primary motor cortex. Activation was always significantly stronger during action imitation than observation or execution.
